A day after a backstage blow up at Good Morning America, Chris Brown is apologizing.
While promoting his new album, F.A.M.E., on an episode of BET’s 106 & Park today (March 23), the R&B/pop star sent his apologies to the GMA staff and explained why he lost his temper.
“First of all, I want to apologize to anybody who was startled in the office, or anybody who was offended or really looked disappointed at my actions because I’m disappointed in the way I acted,” Brown said.
Brown says he was “thrown off” when GMA anchor Robin Roberts began questioning him on his 2009 assault on his former girlfriend Rihanna, because, despite Roberts saying he approved her Rihanna-related questions, he had no idea the subject would be brought up.
“When I do shows or when I do interviews, we always send out a ‘talking point’ sheet,” he said. “Whoever isn’t compliant with what we want to do so we can equally accomplish a goal, we usually kind of back out and wait until it’s a better situation.
“The talking points [for GMA] were positivity, creative, and everything that was sent to me was about the album….as the interview proceeded, I was thrown off by it. I felt like they told us this so they could get us on the show and exploit me. That’s what I thought and I took it very, very hard.” While Brown didn’t cop to the window-smashing, he admitted he was very upset, but insisted he didn’t hurt anyone, didn’t try to hurt anyone, and just needed to “let off steam.”
“I had to release all the anger I had inside me because I felt like I worked so hard for this music and I love my fans and I love to be able to make positive music that I felt like they just kept trying to take it away from me.” “I got very emotional,” he continued, “and I apologize for acting like that.”
Brown also urged his fans not to make threats to Roberts and to focus on positivity.
ABC doesn’t seem to have any lingering feelings over the incident and has no plans to ban Brown from the network. In fact, Roberts says he might be back on GMA again soon. “We’ve extended an invitation and we’d love to have him back and he’s seriously considering that,” Roberts said on GMA this morning.
Brown’s appearance on another ABC show, Dancing With The Stars, is also set to go on as scheduled next week.
